Die Head Cleaning
Understanding the Die Head in Blown Film Extrusion
In a blown film extrusion line, the die head is the component where all critical processes occur. It is the precision-engineered assembly that forms molten polymer into a continuous tubular film bubble, the foundation of every flexible packaging product produced on the line.
The die head sits at the output end of the extruder. Molten polymer, pressurized and heated to precise temperatures, is forced through a circular die gap inside the die head. This gap determines the initial wall thickness and uniformity of the film. In multi-layer blown film lines running 3, 5, 7, or 9 layers, the die head is a complex co-extrusion assembly with multiple melt channels, each delivering a different polymer layer. These channels must remain clean, aligned, and free of contamination for the film to meet specifications.

Key components inside a blown film die head include
Die body:
The central housing that distributes melt flow uniformly around the circumference
Mandrel:
The inner core that shapes the internal surface of the film bubble
Heating zones:
Maintain precise melt temperatures across the die body; contamination affects thermal uniformity
Die gap / die lip:
The precision-machined opening that determines film thickness even minor contamination here causes thickness variation
Melt flow channels:
Individual polymer pathways (critical in multi-layer dies) that must remain clean to prevent cross-contamination and flow imbalance
Die bolts and clamping system:
High-torque fasteners that hold the assembly under operating pressure; improper handling during maintenance causes costly damage
What We Do
Expert Die Head Cleaning for Blown Film Line
A dirty or degraded die head is one of the most direct causes of film defects, unplanned downtime, and wasted material in any blown film operation. Over time, polymer residue, carbon deposits, and contamination accumulate on die surfaces, affecting melt flow consistency, film uniformity, and surface quality.
INGSOL provides professional die head cleaning services specifically engineered for blown film extrusion lines. Our work covers 3-layer, 5-layer, 7-layer, and up to 9-layer multi-layer plants across a wide range of OEM platforms.
We do not offer a generic maintenance service. Every die head cleaning project is executed by trained engineers using precision tools, structured methodology, and a commitment to zero-compromise quality.
What Our Die Head Cleaning Service Covers:
- Specialised die head cleaning for blown film extrusion lines
- Multi-layer capability: 3-layer, 5-layer, 7-layer and 9-layer plants
- Flawless die surface restoration and film quality improvement
- Die head disassembly, cleaning, inspection and reassembly
- Surface quality verification using precision measurement tools
- Die head bolt kits and cleaning kits supplied as part of complete service
- Urgent parts availability from INGSOL's managed inventory
WHY DIE HEAD CLEANING MATTERS
The Cost of a Neglected Die Head
In blown film manufacturing, the die head is the heart of the extrusion process. When it is not maintained properly, the consequences compound quickly:
- Film thickness variations and surface defects affect product quality
- Polymer degradation inside the die causes black specs and contamination
- Excessive torque on die bolts leads to damage during shutdowns
- Uncontrolled downtime extends far beyond a planned maintenance window
- Scrap rates increase, and OEE falls across the line
Regular expert die head cleaning protects your asset, preserves film quality, and keeps your line running at the performance levels it was designed for. INGSOL’s die head cleaning service is structured to minimise disruption and maximise return to full operational performance.
HOW WE DELIVER
Our Seamless 5-Step Die Head Cleaning Process
We follow a structured, disciplined approach for every die head cleaning engagement. No improvisation. No shortcuts.
Before any disassembly begins, our engineers assess the die head using the OEM drawing or approved reference drawing as the baseline. The drawing is reviewed to verify the die head configuration, component arrangement, critical dimensions and assembly specifications. All components, bolt positions, melt temperatures and surface conditions are documented to ensure accurate reassembly and identify any components requiring replacement.
Die head disassembly is performed using powered torque wrenches and nutrunners to manage bolt removal safely and precisely. Cleaning is carried out using proven techniques that remove polymer residue, carbon buildup and contamination without damaging precision die surfaces. Strict safety protocols and comprehensive risk assessment govern every step.
After cleaning each die component is inspected using precision tools including Diatest Dial Gauges, Surface finish, dimensional accuracy, die centring and melt flow channel integrity are verified to ensure uniform die gap clearance and consistent polymer flow. Any deviations are corrected before reassembly ensuring the die head meets OEM specifications for reliable extrusion performance and consistent film quality.
Reassembly follows OEM specifications with die head bolts torqued to exact values using calibrated tooling. Calibration is completed and test runs are conducted to confirm the die is performing correctly before handover.
Project completion is documented with a comprehensive service report. Your team receives full details of the work performed, observations, parts used, and recommended follow-up actions.
